John Avery Gere Carson (1856-1930), a native of Baltimore, Maryland, founded the Carson Naval Stores Company in 1898, having been associated with other naval stores firms in Savannah and Chatham County. He was the son of Sarah Frances and Carvill Hynson Carson. He was prominent in social and civic affairs in Savannah and Chatham County, Georgia, being twice an alderman and a member of a Chatham County Commission. He was president of Merchants' National Bank of Savannah, Georgia. Carson was married to Carrie Gordon Cubbedge Carson (b.1856), who was born in Savannah, Georgia.
