Alabama Centennial Commission

Hide Profile

Authority: Acts 1919, No. 85, pp. 77-78.

Legislation in 1919 created the Ala. Centennial Commission, which was composed of the governor, the state auditor, the superintendent of education, and the director of the Dept. of Archives and History, ex-officio, and three other members appointed by the governor. The governor would be president and the director of the Ala. Department of Archives and History would be secretary and historian. Members would serve without compensation, but be reimbursed for travel and living expenses while on the business of the Commission. The Commission would keep a careful report of all proceedings; it could adopt rules for its guidance and exercise of powers; and it was mandated, after its business was completed, to make a full, detailed report to the governor. As deemed proper, separate documents or papers for publication, which would be printed and bound as other official reports and paid from the state printing fund, would accompany the report.

Duties of the Commission included the preparation and adoption of plans for the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the admission of the state into the union. To that end, the Commission could hold public exercises, provide for historical pageants or scenic displays, mark points, places, or buildings associated with the history of the state, arrange for the compilation of historical commemorative publications, and adopt other plans or perform other actions as necessary.

Ten thousand dollars, or a part as may be necessary, was appropriated.

The Commission is not listed in the indexes of the Code of 1923 nor the Acts published in 1920 through 1923.
