The United Electric Car Company was a tram car manufacturer based in Preston, Lancashire, England at the turn of the twentieth century. The company manufactured and supplied street cars or trolleys to urban transportation companies around the world including in cities in Argentina, Australia, Uruguay, and Great Britain. The company was purchased by a Glasgow, Scotland based locomotive and tram car manufacturer Dick, Kerr & Co. in 1917 and one year later in 1918 merged with the English Electric Company. Electric tramways became popular at the end of the 19th century as a way to transport passengers quickly and efficiently through urban areas as the tram cars were smaller than conventional trains.
