Sledge, E. B. (Eugene Bonderant), 1923-
Native of Mobile, Alabama, enlisted in the Marines in 1942. In February 1944, he was assigned to Company K, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment and sent overseas to New Caledonia. Took part in the amphibious assaults on Peleliu and Okinawa. Discharged in 1946, earned a B.S. and an M.S. from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, and a Ph. D. in zoology from the University of Florida. Professor of biology at the University of Montevallo. In 1981, published "With the Old Breed, at Peleliu and Okinawa," a memoir of his wartime service.
