Henry Grattan Tyrrell, born in 1867, graduated from the School of Practical Science, University of Toronto, in 1886. He worked on a survey crew in Quebec and Maine for a branch of the CPR between 1886-88. He later gained experience as a civil engineer for a variety of firms in the United States and constructed several notable bridges. In 1915, he set up the Tyrrell Engineering Company in Detroit, and later established offices in New York and Washington. He published a number of books and pamphlets on engineering, concentrating on the construction of bridges, mills and factories. He died in 1948.
