American Craft Council
The American Craftsmen's Cooperative Council was founded in 1943. The name was changed in 1950 to American Craftsmen's Educational Council; in 1955 to American Craftsmen's Council; in 1969 to American Crafts Council; and in 1979 to American Craft Council. The Council was founded to serve as an educational organization to foster appreciation of the work of American craftsmen. The Council maintains the American Craft Museum, publishes a magazine and other works, and operates an audio-visual service and a library. The Council sponsored conferences and shows about various aspects and types of crafts such as craft materials and equipment shows, international lecture tours and other special events, prepared publications, and was involved with the School for American Craftsmen. The Council sponsored participatory programs in conjunction with the National Park Service at federal sites.
