De Vette, Russell, 1923-

De Vette received his A.B. from Hope College in 1947 and his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1948. In 1947 he was the first player to receive the MIAA Most Valuable Player Award in basketball. He began his career at Hope College as a coach in football, basketball, and track. In 1955 he became head coach of both football and basketball. From 1970-1977 De Vette served as chair of the department of physical education. He continued to teach physical education courses until his retirement in 1988.
