Massachusetts. Governor (1692-1695 : Phips)
Phips was Governor of Massachusetts, 1692-1694, when he was recalled to England to face unspecified charges; he died before trial. He was born in Maine; for service to the British Crown he was knighted in 1687. He played a role in the Salem Witch Trials. Anthony Austin was one of the founders of Suffield, Ct., where he held various offices.
