Jebb, Sir Richard Claberhouse (1841-1905: Knight Classical Scholar Historian MP Educationist, Professor of Greek, University of Glasgow)

Hide Profile

Sir Richard Claberhouse Jebb was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1875 . A brilliant scholar, Jebb was a man of fine literary tastes and powers and an effective teacher. However, he was stern when confronted by lack of preparation and he lacked the common touch, particularly in dealing with local Glaswegian students from humble backgrounds,'Glasgow Scotch not being among his accomplishments.' Yet Jebb became a popular lecturer and when he returned to his classes following a serious illness the students made a presentation to him with the Principal in the chair. He resigned the Chair in 1889 when he was appointed the Regius Chair of Greek at the University of Cambridge, England.
