Oakland resident John A. Stanly, a San Francisco attorney and judge, owned the Rincon de los Carneros Rancho, originally part of the 1836 land grant of Nicholas Higuera. His son, Edward Stanly, managed the ranch beginning in the late 1870s; he was particularly charged with managing the dairy farming and dairying.
