Elias W. Leavenworth was born in 1803. He was the second mayor of Syracuse, New York. He served as mayor in 1849 and 1859, as secretary of state in 1853 and in the U.S. Congress in 1874. He married Mary Forman, the daughter of Joshua Forman, who was one of the founders of Syracuse. His second wife was Harriet Townley Ball. He died in 1887. The Leavenworth Mansion, which he built on James Street in Syracuse, was a historic landmark in the city.
