Railway chartered in 1832 as the New York and Erie Railroad Company; reorganized in 1861 as the Erie Railway Company; reorganized again in 1878 as the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad Company. After several additional successive reorganizations, the company became known as the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad in 1960.
