Aharon Ze'ev Eshkoli was born in 1901 (Lodz, Poland), and died in 1948 (Jerusalem). He received a traditional Jewish education, attending universities in Berlin, Liège, and Paris, and attending the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (Berlin). He emigrated to Palestine in 1922 but left soon after to study abroad, returning to settle there in 1930. During World War II he served as a chaplain with the British Army. He wrote historical and popular articles for newspapers and scholarly journals, and was a prolific author of scholarly and popular historical books in Hebrew.
