United Packinghouse Workers of America. Local 28
Variant namesLocal 11 of the UPWA started as a local union in 1935 and became part of the Packinghouse Worker Organizing Committee of the CIO in 1937. In 1943 the UPWA-CIO was established and Local 11 became the official Boston local. After the Colonial Strike of 1954-1955, Local 11 was de-certified by the NLRB as a result of a vote by non-strikers. The union was recertified as Local 616 in 1956 after the strike settlement.
