In 1912 the Territorial Roads Commission's name was changed to the State Highway Commission (1912 NM Laws, Chp. 54, Sec. 1). Between approximately 1912 and 1967 the State Highway Commission also used the name State Highway Department. In 1967 the State Highway Department was established and some of the functions of the State Highway Commission were transferred to the State Highway Department (1967 NM Laws, Chp. 266, Sec. 5). In 1987 the State Highway Department was merged with the State Transportation Department into the State Highway and Transportation Department (1987 NM Laws, Chp. 268, Sec. 35).
