Joseph Peace and his brother William Peace (1773-1865) were partners in a general merchandising firm in Raleigh, N.C. William Peace was also a philanthropist who donated funds and land in Raleigh for the foundation of a seminary for girls, which was operated by a corporation under Presbyterian influence from 1857 to 1872, becoming Peace Institute and Peace College.
