Robert Rudolph Stuart White was born on 18 August 1908 in Hong Kong the son of a cashier. He matriculated under the name of Stuart White at the University of Glasgow , Scotland in 1926 but as was common at this time his classes were held at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow . The College was affiliated with the University and as a result students of the College were able to matriculate and graduate with degrees from the University. He graduated from the University of Glasgow first class BSc (Honours) in Electrical Engineering in 1930 . He was a member of the engineering unit of the Officer Training Corps (OTC) until 1930.

Stuart White completed a 5 year apprenticeship with Mavor & Coulson Ltd, Glasgow (now Anderson Strathclyde Ltd). After graduation he was awarded the two year Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarship to study management methods. As part of this scholarship he worked in Rugby, England; Manchester, England; Berlin, Germany and New York, USA. During his career he worked as a management consultant and director for companies such as Orr & Boss and Partners Ltd, management consultants, Cheadle, England; Brentford Electric Ltd, heavy electrical plant manufacturer, Crawley, England and Mars Ltd, confectioner, Chicago, USA. He was an Associate of the Royal Technical College (ARTC) and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC). He died in London on 17 March 1981 .
