LeRoy West came to Juneau in 1929. He began working for the federal government in 1935 with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads. Later he worked for the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Corps of Engineers. After receiving a certificate as a professional electrical engineer in 1949 he began working for the U.S. Coast Guard in Juneau as a civilian employee. In 1975, at his retirement, he was presented the Commandant's Award, the highest civilian award possible for outstanding job performance. LeRoy West died December 31, 1985 in Juneau.
