Ilyin was an artist, born in Kazan City in the province of Kazan, Volga Valley, Russia. His parents were from aristocratic families in the Volga Valley. During World War I, he was stationed near Petrograd, then fled to Siberia with his wife, Nadine, continued by train to Harbin, Manchuria, and on to Tokyo. They sailed to San Francisco in 1922, where they were joined by his mother, brother, and brother's wife. They held many art exhibits in San Francisco and were active in San Francisco society. Ilyin was known particularly for his portrait paintings.
