The League of Women Voters of Johnson County was established in 1920 by Zella White Stewart. The Johnson County league is a local branch of the National League of Women Voters which evolved from the National American Woman Suffrage Association after the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the vote was ratified. As a nonpartisan organization, the league was to provide a forum for women to discuss topics in politics so they could become informed voters. Later its scope was expanded to educating the electorate at large about a broad range of local, state, and national issues.
Since 1974 men have been admitted as members of the league.
