Margaret Tucker Mitchell (1905-2001) was born in Iowa and moved with her family to Seattle, Washington around the time of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909. Shortly thereafter, her family purchased land in the Yakima Valley, where she spent the remainder of her childhood. Though beginning her college career at Washington State College in Pullman, she transferred to the University of Washington to major in English and journalism. After graduating in 1928, she travelled to Calgary, Canada to visit a friend and wrote briefly for the Calgary Herald. In June 1929, Margaret married M.B. "Mike" Mitchell, her former UW classmate, editor and publisher of the Ballard Tribune and a Washington State representative. She and her husband settled in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Margaret was active in her community and had an avid interest in theater, staging regular productions at the Washington Athletic Club.
