American Veterans Committee. Harvard Chapter.

Hide Profile

The American Veterans Committee was founded in 1944, during World War II, as a liberal veterans organization. Targeted in anti-communist campaigns in the late 1940s, it lost significant membership, but continued through 2007, when the last two chapters closed. Originally part of the Cambridge Chapter, a separate Harvard Chapter of the American Veterans Committee was established in 1946. Although the chapter was not restricted to undergraduates, it had 830 undergraduate members at its peak. The chapter ran seminars for veterans and provided a social outlet. In 1950, it campaigned heavily against the University's decision to cut all subsidized housing for married students.
