Welch, Lula James, 1873-
After studying theater with the actress Helena Modjeska, Welch became a nurse and worked with her husband, Dr. Curtis Welch in his medical practice. In 1906 they went to Alaska, where for 20 years they cared for the people of Council City, Candle, and Nome; in 1925 they organized an expedition to bring serum by dog sled to Nome during a breakout of diphtheria.
