New York Child Labor Committee.

Hide Profile

The New York Child Labor Committee was formed in 1902 in response to the growing awareness of the abuses of child labor in New York State and the nation. The organization was formed by a number of prominent individuals and social reform activists who desired to create greater control over child labor to end the educational, economic and physical abuse children were suffering under extant labor legislation. The committee was successful in lobbying for the enactment of legislation preventing underage employment, employment of children in dangerous industries and employment of children after certain hours. The committee also successfully lobbied for legislation requiring working papers for youths.

By 1941 the committee had been successful in eradicating a majority of the abuses of the New York child labor system, and on December 3, 1941 the membership formally approved a resolution to dissolve the committee.
