Ebenezer Chaplin (1733-1822) was born in Hampton, Conn. He graduated from Yale College in 1763 and received the degree of A.M. from Yale in 1767. He was ordained minster of the Second Parish of Sutton, Mass., in 1764, and remained in this position until 1792, when he was dismissed by a vote of the parish. Chaplin was accused of harsh treatment of his daughter, who died in 1791, supposedly of a broken heart. He continued to reside in Sutton until 1803, when he removed to Hardwick.
