John Francis Gleason (1835-1920) was born in Bedford, Mass. He was a student at Amherst College from 1854 to 1855, and later studied theology at Columbian College in Washington, D.C., from 1870 to 1871. He was ordained in 1873 and served as pastor of various Congregational churches in Massachusetts from 1873 to 1917.

Gleason served in the 22nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers from 1861 to 1864. From 1864 to 1866, he assisted the War Department in Washington with the reorganization of Negro troops.
