Became a lieutenant in the Imperial German Army. Later transferred to the Infantry Regiment Grossherzog v. Baden Nr-126 in Strassburg -

From November until the end of the war was commander of Flying Division I on the Western Front, and of Flying Division 16 in the East and in Serbia -
