Steamship Savannah Replica Commission (Ga.)
The Steamship Savannah Replica Commission was established by an Act of the Georgia General Assembly in 1963. Its purpose was to promote the building of a replica of the original steamship Savannah of 1818 (the first steam vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean). The replica was to be used as a stationary museum. Governor Sanders of Georgia appropriated $150,000 for the project and donations of money, labor, materials, etc. were made by others.
