In the mid 1950s, Dorland J. Henderson, overcoming discrimination, became one of top engineers in the Department of Transportation (N.J.). One of his first assignments was to develop a low level lighting system for the Route 72 bridge spanning Stafford Township and Long Beach Island. This bridge was named after him in 2000.
