Ringgold Barracks, now known as Fort Ringgold and also once called Camp Ringgold, is located in Rio Grande City, Texas. Established in 1948 and once the southernmost United States outpost, it was retired in 1944. It was named in honor of Brevet Major Samuel Ringgold, the first United States Army officer to die from wounds received in the battle of Palo Alto.
