John "Jack" Greenwood Mitchell was born December 5, 1892 to James and Lavinia Mitchell in South Shields, England. Jack started working in the shipyard at age 11. The Mitchell family moved to the United States, and Jack later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. There he worked in a machine shop, then attended Brandon College from 1912-1915. Mitchell was 24 when he accepted Christ. He started studying the Bible, and later preached. Louis Sperry Chafer met Jack in Tacoma, Washington, and was impressed with him. Chafer invited Mitchell to speak in his church, Scofield Memorial Church in Dallas, Texas, while Chafer made a trip to Scotland in 1924. Mitchell remained in Dallas as an assistant at the church, and enrolled in the first class at Evangelical Theological College, which was later renamed Dallas Theological Seminary. Mitchell married Mary Eby on April 20, 1929. They had met in Canada and corresponded while Mitchell was in Dallas and Mary studied at Biola in California. After pastoring in Grand Rapids, MI, Mitchell moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1931 to direct the Portland Union Bible Classes, which became Central Bible Church in 1942. Mitchell became a visiting professor at the Evangelical Theological College in 1935, and continued in that capacity for many years. On February 14, 1936, Mitchell organized a group of pastors and businessmen to found the Multnomah School of the Bible. Mitchell wrote several books and also had a radio ministry. Dr. Mitchell retired from the pastorate of Central Bible Church in 1967. He continued teaching and serving as Chairman of the Board at Multnomah until he died in 1990.
