A member of the University of Michigan medical class of 1944, Dr. Bates was an intern-resident at the University Hospital from 1944-1949 and served at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital from 1953-1955. Dr. Bates was very active in the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity and Galens Honorary Medical Society during his years at the University of Michigan. During his later years, Dr. Bates served as the class historian collecting and distributing biographies of the Medical School's class of 1944.

Bates, (b. March 11, 1925) served with the 97th Infantry, Merrill's Marauders, and the 475th Infantry. He served as a technical sergeant, and was honorably discharged December 1945. A resident of Cincinnati (Ohio), he eventually settled in Baraboo (Wis.) after the war.
