Captain Hiawatha P. Wood was a member of the U.S. Army. He served in WWII and the Korean War. He was attached to a field artillery unit. He served in China where he taught field artillery methods to the Chinese. He received three battle stars and a commendation for meritorious service. He was also injured in the line of duty. Upon returning from WWII, he attended what is now Central Michigan University. He was born in Philadelphia and was reared in Saginaw, Mich.
