Geoff Winningham was born March 4, 1943, in Jackson, Tennessee. He graduated with a B.A. degree in English from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1965. He earned his Master's degree in photography from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1968, where he studied with Aaron Siskind. From 1968 to 1969, he taught photography at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Since 1969 he has been a professor of art and photography at Rice University and currently serves as Professor of Art and Master of Wiess College at Rice.
