Richard Starr Dana was born May 22 or 23, 1836, in New York City, son of Richard Perkins Dana and Juliette H. (Starr) Dana. He died January 19, 1904, in New York City. In 1863 he entered as a clerk in Russell & Co., an American commission house in the China trade, rose to the position of general manager of the concern in Hong Kong and retired from the company in 1869.
