Lindley family.
Capitalists. Thomas Morton Lindley (1819-1896) came to California (1849) and established Lindley & Company, a wholesale grocery and import company at Sacramento (1869). Company marketed "Cherub" brand foods and "Motor" coffee. Eldest son, Douglas A. Lindley, became partner (1886) and incorporated family business first as Lindley Mercantile Company (1904) and later as Lindley and Company (1919). Under Douglas Lindley family enterprises expanded into land development in Yuma County, Ariz. (1892-1901), ranching in Tehama County, Calif. and unsuccessful railroad development in Sacramento and Yolo Counties (1908-1912).
