William Hutt born and raised in Toronto in 1920. He saw service in the World War II for which he was awarded the Military Medal. He developed and interest in acting at the University of Toronto, performing at Hart House Theatre. In the early 1950s he performed with Ottawa's Canadian Repertory Theatre for two seasons, becoming associate director in the second year. Hutt has been actor, director and associate director at Stratford Festival, and was the first winner of the Tyrone Guthrie Award in 1954. Hut has also worked at the Grand Theatre, London, Ontario; the Vancouver Playhouse and the Shaw Festival. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1969 and received the Governor General's Award for lifetime achievement in 1992. Hutt holds honourary doctorates from the University of Ottawa, University of Guelph, University of Western Ontario, McMaster University and University of Toronto.
