Carroll graduated from Harvard (1934); began his career writing for motion pictures and television in 1949; nominated for an Oscar for The hustler; was known for his adaptations of classical material as well as his dramatic television specials; his many credits include The Louvre and Forbidden city (both Emmy winners), the documentaries Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Truman at Pottsdam, and the teleplay for the Beacon Hill pilot; he died in Los Angeles, Nov. 3, 1988.
