Eugene Gray Payne. Editorial cartoonist, artist. b. Charlotte, North Carolina. Educated at Syracuse University. Initially worked as a commercial artist. With the exception of one year with the Birmingham News (Ala.), he worked at the Charlotte Observer, 1959-1986. He continues to do free-lance editorial cartoons for the Observer. He experimented with political cartooning on television in the early 1970's. Awarded the Sigma Delta Chi Prize and the Pulitzer Prize in 1967.
