Master Sergeant (MSG) Walter S. Sammis was inducted into the U.S. Army on 4 December 1942. During World War II (WWII), he served in the European Theater of Operation, and in occupied Germany. Sammis was discharged on 6 January 1946. On 4 November 1948, he reenlisted in the U.S. Army, and was assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey. From April 1952 to March 1955, he served as a platoon sergeant with the 278th Infantry Regimental Combat Team in Iceland and at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He became a Light Weapons Infantry Instructor at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas in June 1956. From September 1957 to June 1963, he instructed the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) unit at Oklahoma State University. Sammis next served as platoon sergeant with E Company, 19th Infantry Regiment, 4th U.S. Army Missile Command (Air Transportable) in Korea. In July 1964, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Training Center, Armor, at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he trained the Basic Training Companies. After retiring on 1 February 1968, Sammis accepted the position of Military Science Instructor at the New York Military Academy and was promoted to Warrant Officer (WO).
