Albuquerque Urban Progress (UP) was founded in July 1966 by citizens interested in maintaining and improving the physical environment of Albuquerque. It was a non-partisan and non-political organization that promoted citizen participation in the urban process. The originators of this organization hoped to revitalize interest in the physical development and beautification of Albuquerque. Albuquerque Urban Progress (UP) was actively engaged in issues concerning the Rio Grande, air pollution, water quality, and parks and recreation. Albuquerque UP endorsed the Model Cities and Urban Renewal programs and participated in establishing goals for the City of Albuquerque. In addition, Albuquerque Urban Progress (UP) was an informational resource. They held monthly meetings on subjects of current interest and sought partnerships with other groups that were interested in similar projects. Albuquerque Urban Progress (UP) heartily supported the City Planning Commission and the City Planning Department in their efforts to establish sign control regulations in the city. Albuquerque Urban Progress was active for about three years, ceasing to exist by 1970.
