Watson, a widow with a son from Flint (Mich.), served one term in the Michigan House of Representatives, 1947-1948. Her main interest was education, resulting in her appointment to several state government educational commissions after her service as a legislator. She taught both before and after being a politician. In 1959 she was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of the value of her teaching.
