Henry Gresham (1833-1883) was the son of Thomas Gresham ([1784-1838]; of "Woodlawn" and later "Dewsville," King and Queen County, Va.) and Mary Ellen "Polly" (Dew) Gresham ([1790-1836]; of "Dewsville"). He was educated at the University of Virginia, Jefferson Medical College, and the Philadelphia School of Anatomy. During the Civil War, he served in the 55th Virginia Infantry Regiment. In 1862, he resigned his post on account of health reasons, but soon rejoined his regiment. Later, he served as an inspector of conscripts in Danville, Va. After the war, he worked in the insurance business and as a superintendent of schools in Essex County, Va.. His wife Laura Monroe (Jones) Gresham (1834-1912), was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Jones (1816-1846) and Alice J. (Monroe) Jones (1818-1856).
