In 1975, when the Newberry's Director and Librarian became President and Librarian, the position of Vice President was also created.
The first Vice President, James Wells, served from 1975 until his retirement in 1984. Soon after Wells' departure, Joel Samuels was appointed Administrative Vice President. Vice Presidents were later appointed to head the Library's Academic, Administration and Finance, and Development divisions.
