Seele, Hermann, 1823-1902

Born to Jonas and Anna (Runge) Seele, Friedrich Hermann Seele (1823-1902) immigrated from Hildesheim, Germany, to Galveston, Texas, in 1843. Two years later, he moved to New Braunfels and became the community’s first teacher. Seele also served the community as the Comal County’s first district clerk (1846), mayor of New Braunfels (1860s), member of the Texas Legislature (1863-1865), board and faculty member of the New Braunfels Academy (1865-1879), and postmaster of New Braunfels (1889-1895). In addition to holding public office, Seele began practicing law in 1855 and fought with the 31st Brigade of the Texas Militia during the Civil War. Furthermore, Seele sang with the Texas State Sängerbund, also known as the Germania Singing Society; wrote for the Neu Branfelser Zeitung ; and composed verse and prose, including the Texas Fahrten with C. Wilke. Translated as Travels in Texas, the Texas Fahrten is a musical drama with English narration and German songs that discusses life for German immigrants in 19th century Texas.
