Jesuit priest.
Hyland graduated from Boston English High School (1918) and attended Boston College for two years before entering the Jesuit order (1920). He was awarded Bachelor's (1925) and Master's degrees (1927) from Gonzaga University. Hyland taught in the Philippines prior to being ordained (1933). He returned to the United States (1934) to study and to teach at Catholic University in Washington, DC, but went back to Manila to teach (1936). At the time of the fall of the Philippines, he was dean of the Jesuit Theology School in Manila and was held in a Japanese internment camp. After World War II, Hyland continued to teach in the Philippines at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Hyland died in Manila on May 1, 1984.
