The idea for the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups began at the annual meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in 1978. Group workers attending the meeting recognized that social work conferences did not include group work presentation and held an impromptu meeting to plan a conference dedicated to group work. The First Annual Group Work Symposium was held in 1979. The Committee for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups was formed at the symposium and was incorporated in 1981. In 1985, the committee became a membership organization and was renamed the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups.
