James Read (d. 1777) came to Savannah, Georgia from Charleston, South Carolina in 1759 where he was the proprietor of a ropewalk. In addition to being a business partner of James Mossman, Read served as a member of the Council of Georgia, as speaker of the Commons House of Assembly elected on May 25, 1764, as a warden for Christ Church in Savannah, and as a Commissioner for Pilotage for the Tybee Bar and Savannah River. James Mossman (d. 1803) was a merchant in the partnership Read-Mossman, a tax assessor and collector within Christ Church Parish in Savannah, and a Commissioner of Pilotage for the Tybee Bar and Savannah River.
