Biencourt, Charles de, baron de Saint-Just, 1591 or 2-1623.

Hide Profile

Colonizer in Acadia (Nova Scotia) and governor of the colony of Port-Royal (Annapolis Royal).

Biencourt, eldest son of Jean de Biencourt de Poutrincourt, founder of Port-Royal, accompanied his father and his brother Jacques on colonizing expeditions to Acadia in 1606 and again in Jan. of 1611. When his father returned to France, Biencourt took command of Port-Royal in 1615, and remained in Acadia until his death in 1623. Despite his harsh dealings with Jesuit missionaries there, his persistence in the face of English raiders was crucial to the continued French presence in Acadia.
