Samuel William Bloom, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and Professor of Community and Preventive Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center, was a founding member of the Medical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association and served as its chairman from 1964-1965. His interests and publications dealt with the sociology of medical education and the doctor-patient relationship.

Bernhard J. Stern (1894-1956) was a social scientist and political radical who came under persecution from Congressional investigative committees during the McCarthy period. The materials in the collection were assembled by Samuel W. Bloom, a sociology professor who wrote an article on Stern, "The Intellectual in a Time of Crisis," for Volume 26 of the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences .
